Ten Minute Mixtapes Volume 8: Iga Massardi
Ten minutes to make a playlist chosen from songs on my 160GB iPod Classic. That’s the concept behind Ten Minute Mixtapes, in which I get people to make them for me. It’s really simple, all they have to do is browse my iPod’s library and just select the tracks they want, with a minimum limit of eight songs, and a maximum restriction of two songs from the same album and artist. The ten-minute time limit gives it an added adrenaline edge, so they don’t have too much time to think when picking their songs. It’s so easy that I can just ask anyone I find to make one without having to make a prior appointment.
This mixtape was curated by Iga Massardi, guitarist of too many bands to mention. OK, not that many, but three that I know of. I first knew of him when attending The Trees & The Wild’s debut album launch at Goethe Haus on May 20th 2009. I knew of the band but hadn’t heard their music until I was at that show, and I was surprised to find a full house of so many rabid females. One of those “How did this happen?” moments, when you belatedly discover something everyone else seemingly already knew.
After the show, I discovered that the band’s frontman Remedy Waloni would be leaving for the US a few days later to study for six months, so that left The Trees & The Wild on hiatus. Iga took up guitar duties for Tika And The Dissidents and continued to do so even after The Trees & The Wild resumed activity with no harm done to their momentum after the lengthy break. Their intense live shows certainly helped.
Then around August of last year Iga joined Soulvibe. A puzzling move considering the contrast in genre, but Iga goes way back with the Soulvibe guys and is a versatile enough player to fit in with their style. The downside of being in too many bands to mention (OK, three) is that he’s “on a break” (his words) from The Trees & The Wild, though still plays the occasional show with Tika And The Dissidents. If you want the full story you’re better off asking him yourself, to which he’ll probably answer with a sly grin.
Gravitasi, Iga’s debut album with Soulvibe (and their third overall), should be out sometime in June. When his weekend schedule allows it, Iga also helps teach at Kelas Gitar Gratis, which provides free guitar lessons at Taman Suropati. Who knows, maybe someone who learns from KGG will also end up joining too many bands to mention.
This mix was curated on May 9th 2012 at Never Been Better in Kemang, where Iga was hanging out. It’s become one of his favourite places because “the wi-fi is fast”. The food’s not bad, either. That night Iga was with some friends who also contributed their own Ten Minute Mixtapes, which will be uploaded soon.
